The conclusion of the fall sports seasons and the beginning of the winter sports is the busiest time of the year for TFC athletes and athletic administrators. The week of November 8 proved to be both successful and hectic as volleyball and cross country represented TFC at their respective national tournaments and men’s and women’s basketball teams cranked up their young seasons.
The cross country teams participated at the NCCAA Division II national meet on November 14 in Houghton, New York. The TFC women’s 5k was led by Jamie Smith, who posted a finishing time of 20:59. Smith’s average mile time of 6:46 placed her 11th out of the 43 competitors. Katie Zimmerman finished in 24th with a time of 22:56, and Jessie Smith crossed the line in 34th with 24:41.
The men’s cross country team was led by Ian Caudill’s 8k time of 30:40. Caudill led the Screaming Eagles in 16th overall. Teammate Tim Sestak tailed Caudill in 21st position with a time of 31:07. Nick Strob finished 36th out of 56 runners with a time of 33:27.
TFC men’s basketball opened the season with a 2-1 start with wins over Warren Wilson College (81-64) and Welch College (118-96). However, the Screaming Eagles dropped each of its games in the week of November 8. Coach Lee Moore’s fast paced offense and the Screaming Eagles were outlasted by Montreat College, 108-105. Toccoa dropped its second close contest of the week at nearby Truett McConnell College, 78-77. After losing two games by a combined four points, Toccoa was topped 123-99 at Oglethorpe University on Saturday. TFC’s difficult slate of road games will continue as the Screaming Eagles will travel to NCAA Division I opponents Presbyterian College (11/18) and Garner Webb (11/19) on consecutive nights. TFC will also be on the road at local rival Piedmont College on November 21 at 4:00PM.
The Toccoa Falls women’s team opened their season on November 10 with a 71-49 victory at Wesleyan College. TFC slumped to a 1-2 start with road defeats at Truett McConnell College and Johnson University (TN). First year coach Andrew Leviner and the Screaming Eagles will travel LaGrange College on November 17 before hosting Piedmont College on November 19 and Johnson University (TN) on November 21. Tip off with Piedmont will be at 7:00, and Johnson’s tip will be at 1:00.
TFC volleyball and Coach Selina Slate traveled to Kissimmee on November 11-12 to participate in its first national tournament since 1999. TFC qualified for nationals after finishing as runners-up in the region tournament. Toccoa was given the 9th seed and entered the tournament with a 20-12 record. TFC was pooled with defending national champions Kentucky Christian University, Dallas Christian College, Maranatha Baptist College, and Ozark Christian College. The Screaming Eagles played competitively in each of the matches, but were overpowered in the end by the higher seeded teams. TFC fell to KCU 3-1 (11-25, 25-23, 14-25, and 18-25). Also on November 11, the Screaming Eagles were topped by Dallas Christian in straight sets, 25-27, 12-25, and 14-25. Eventual national champions Maranatha Baptist ousted TFC 16-25, 16-25, and 13-25, and tournament semifinalists Ozark Christian fought off the pesky Screaming Eagles 23-25, 27-29, and 18-25.
