The TFC Screaming Eagles advanced to the title game of the Christian College National Invitational Tournament (CCNIT) with a 76-71 win over the tournament hosts Oakland City University on March 11. In the win over Oakland City, the four time defending tournament champions, TFC jumped to an early first half lead and withstood a late rally by OCU to advance to the tournament championship game (Saturday; 9:00PM EST).
Toccoa Falls jumped to a 13-4 lead within the first five minutes of the game and held a lead throughout the duration of the first half. With 2:26 left in the first period, the Screaming Eagles led 39-26, its largest lead of the game, and held a 39-29 edge at the intermission. In the half, the Screaming Eagles out shot the Mighty Oaks by a 58% – 37% margin.
Oakland City opened the new period with a 7-2 run to cut TFC’s lead to 41-36 with 18:11 remaining in the game. The intense game continued to see-saw as the hosts finally took their first lead of the game, 62-61 with 7:29 left to play. In the final 20 seconds of play, OCU nailed a three pointer to cut TFC’s lead to 73-71, but senior Zach Barrett iced the game with two clutch free throws, his only points of the game, to send TFC to the championship round.
Freshman Jovan Morris (pictured above) led Toccoa Falls College with 26 points on 6-11 shooting from behind the three point arc. Cam Williams added 20 points and 7 rebounds, and Barrett added 14 rebounds and 7 assists to go with his clutch two points. OCU’s Matt Lucas led all scorers with 30 points. Lucas also shot 6-11 from three point range.
The CCNIT title game will be played at 9:00 EST and will feature TFC (13-14) and Morthland College. Morthland (17-14) advanced to the championship game with a 91-78 victory over Brescia University.
